Bellavita Expo London 2018 celebrates UNESCO protected art of Neapolitan pizza making  

The leading Italian food and beverage trade show reveals 5th edition key themes and personalities

 

Bellavita Expo London 2018 (17 -19 June 2018, Business Design Centre, London) will celebrate the art of Neapolitan pizza making – recently included in the UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity – as a long-standing symbol of Italian cuisine that perfectly embodies tradition and innovation. Four Academies will further explore the theme of the event, each with a specific focus: Food, Pizza, Wine & Beer and Mixology.

On Tuesday 19 June, Bellavita Food Academy will host Pizza Day, a day entirely dedicated to the profession of ‘pizzaiuolo’ (pizza master) with masterclasses by Le Centenarie, Naples’ ten oldest and most renowned pizzerias. Michelin star chef Carlo Cracco, TV host at Masterchef Italy, also famous for his recent revisitation of traditional pizza, will join the stage to lead an insightful talk for trade operators and buyers. Italy’s former Minister of Agriculture Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, an active advocate for traditional Neapolitan pizza making and main supporter of its inclusion in the UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, will officially chair the day.

Throughout the show, Bellavita Pizza Academy will invite buyers to discover the secrets of traditional Napoli-style pizza and the best products to create it. Award winning pizzeria Starita and the Starita Pizza Academy team will be the official resident pizzaiolos, continuously making their famous pizzas throughout the show.

 

WINE AND BEER FOCUS

This year, Bellavita Expo London will have a unique focus on Italian wine with the fourth edition of Bellavita Best UK Sommelier, the Italian Wine Professional – ISWA Award, a competition focusing exclusively on Italian wine knowledge and service skills. Le Gavroche, Aquavit, Roux at Parliament Square, Locanda Locatelli, The Five Fields, Murano, Galvin at Windows, Savoy Grill, 67 Pall Mall, Margot, M Restaurant, The Glasshouse and Outlaw’s at the Capital are just some of the top restaurants in the country to take part in order to win the title of Best Italian Wine Professional. The competition is open to all UK restaurants and their sommeliers who will be scored by renowned Master Sommeliers and Masters of Wine from the best restaurants and wine outlets in the UK:

  • Ana Sapungiu MW, Wine Buyer at Oddbins
  • Yves Desmaris MS, Head Sommelier and Wine Buyer at Lutyens
  • Alistair Cooper MW, BBC radio presenter, Consultant and Decanter judge
  • Bruno Besa, Managing Director and founder of Astrum wines
  • Martin Lam, Chef, Restaurateur, Consultant and Wine Buyer for the Zetter Group, Brindisa and Grain Store

The competition is supported by WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust), Harpers and The Buyer, and sponsored by ISWA (Italian Signature Wines Academy).

 

At Bellavita Wine & Beer Academy, ISWA (Italian Signatures Wine Academy) will host five masterclasses with the Italian wine producers that have made history in Italy and beyond: Villa Sandi, Allegrini, Feudi di San Gregorio, Fontanafredda and Frescobaldi. Harpers and The Buyer will host the largest distributors and wine importers in the UK for a series of talks on the latest wine trends. WSET (Wine and Spirit Education Trust) will offer guided tastings to members of the trade following WSET systematic approach to wine tasting while craft beer giant Birrificio Angelo Poretti will also join the Academy stage to host a beer tasting and discuss upcoming hop varieties that are transforming the beer industry in the UK.

 

FOOD FOCUS

During the rest of the event, Bellavita Food Academy will host Michelin star chefs, entrepreneurs and opinion leaders on a series of panel discussions, masterclasses and tastings. In partnership with Restaurant Magazine and Speciality Food Magazine, Bellavita will unpack the challenges and trends that impact the UK foodservice and retail sector, with a focus on Italian food & beverage. Caffé Nero and other key coffee industry brands will join a debate on the Italian influence on the UK coffee shop industry and the food offering within this sector; Lavazza will host a premium coffee tasting open to trade professionals looking for the best coffee variety to enhance the customer experience at the end of a meal. Cheese consortia of Taleggio, Gorgonzola, Pecorino Sardo and Asiago (all protected origin varieties – DOP) will also host an educational masterclass on how to maximise Italian cheeses’ potential, including tips on cooking techniques, waste reduction and import strategies.

 

ITALIAN STYLE MIXOLOGY

The Mixology Academy will host 12 top mixologists from all over the world that will combine their creativity and know-how into jaw-dropping cocktails that perfectly complement food, in true Italian style. From bitter aperitifs to elegant creations inspired by forgotten recipes, the current trend is to rediscover the past in a completely modern way. The urban landscape also works as an inspiration, bringing new and grittier elements to classic drinks. Award winning mixologist Paolo Viola (bartender at The Ritz and Master Mixologist at Ritorno in London, now Bar Manager at Terrazza Calabritto in Milan) will be the Academy’s Resident Mixologist, where he will create a series of cocktails made with classic Italian spirits, newly launched ranges and innovative ingredients, sharing his know-how on how to maximise profits and the secret of running a successful bar.

  • Paolo Viola – award winning former bartender at The Ritz and Master Mixologist at Ritorno in London, now Bar Manager at Terrazza Calabritto in Milan
  • Danny del Monaco – world winner of the Bacardi Martini Grand Prix 2002, president and founder of Italian Barman Style, art director and teacher at “Cocktail in the world mixology”
  • Davide Arcucci – Head Mixologist at Quaglino’s and D&D in London
  • Agostino Schiavo – Head Bartender at the Arts Club in London
